Is In-Floor Heating Worth It?

We get this question a lot, and the short answer is yes, for most people it's worth it. But it depends on your situation, so here's what to think about.

In-floor radiant heating works by running warm water through tubing installed under your floor. The heat rises evenly across the entire room, which means no cold spots near windows and no hot blasts from vents. Your floors are warm to walk on, which makes a real difference in an Ontario winter.

One of the biggest advantages is air quality. Forced-air systems push dust and allergens around your house every time the furnace kicks on. Radiant heating doesn't move air at all, so it's a much better option if anyone in your household has allergies or asthma. It also doesn't dry out the air the way forced-air heat does.

It's quieter too. No fan noise, no ductwork rattling. Just steady, even warmth.

The best time to install in-floor heating is during new construction or a major renovation. Retrofitting it into an existing floor is possible but it adds cost because you need to either come up from a basement ceiling or pull up the existing floor. If you're already doing a renovation or building new, adding radiant heating is much more affordable.
