A lot of homes in Brant County and the surrounding rural areas are on well water. It's a great setup when everything is working properly, but well water comes with its own set of challenges that city water doesn't have.
The most common issue we see is hard water. Hard water has high mineral content, mainly calcium and magnesium, and it leaves white spots and buildup on your faucets, shower doors and dishes. Over time it can also clog up your pipes and shorten the life of your water heater. A water softener takes care of hard water by removing those minerals before the water reaches your fixtures.
Iron is another one. If your water has a metallic taste or you're seeing orange or brown stains in your sinks and toilets, you've got high iron. A proper filtration system handles that.
Then there's bacteria. Well water isn't treated the way municipal water is, so it can carry bacteria that you can't see or taste. A UV purification system kills bacteria and other microorganisms by passing the water through ultraviolet light. It's chemical-free and low maintenance. We install UV systems regularly for rural homeowners in our area.
Bad taste or smell is another sign that something's off. Sulphur gives water a rotten egg smell, and other contaminants can make it taste off. These are all treatable.
If you're on well water and you're not sure about the quality, it's worth getting it tested. We can look at the results and recommend the right combination of treatment systems for your specific water. Every well is different, and what works for your neighbour might not be what you need.
